CIOCIARIA: A LAND TO DISCOVER Minimize

Guided Visits led by an enthusiastic archaeologist

- Friday, January 25, 2008

Anagni, Town of the Popes, picture kindly provided by A.P.T. Frosinone.

Ciociaria  is the  name of an italian region, strategically situated in the heart of Italy, between Rome and Naples. It’s the ideal starting point to explore the whole Country. The province of Frosinone, called Ciociaria (cho-cha-REE-a), is not very well known among tourists, because is "off the beaten track”, but this land rewards generously its visitors with unspoilted nature, magnificent abbeys, archaeological treasures, genuine food and deep traditions.  My aim is to design a travel experience so that you may discover and share with your family and friends the beauty, warmth and culture of this extraordinary area. A customized trip plan will be developed based on your interests, timeframe and budget.  I will consult with you to understand your expectations, desired style of travel and places of interest.  Ciociaria is the place where I was born, I came back here ten years ago, after a long time abroad, and today my goal is to valorize my province, promote its heritage and share with the people the knowledge of its hidden treasures. I will help you find those areas less traveled; so that you can experience the Authentic Italy.

We are proud to be famous for our sense of  hospitality:  Genuinity is the motto of this generous land.  Furthermore, the great advantage for visitors is that Rome  and other famous destinations are just a few miles away.

FLEUR KINSON, brilliant English journalist,  in her recent article about Ciociaria wrote: “A few dozen miles from Rome, but a world away from the hot, hectic capital, Ciociaria’s awesome landscape is peppered with fascinating towns. Beginning just 30 miles east of Rome, and spreading southeast for 50 miles with its back against Abruzzo, Ciociaria is a land of greenhills, fertile valleys and high, forested mountains. Clean and unspoilt, with huge vistas around every bend in the road, it nonetheless has thriving small towns and an enterprising population. It wasn’t always the case. Less than a hundred years ago, Ciociaria was a byword for economic migration, with the locals leaving in droves. But now the young people of Ciociaria are staying put, creating small businesses, encouraging tourism, bringing local wine and foodstuffs up to gourmet standards. Meanwhile, the previous generations who went abroad to make their fortunes have come back to retire. There are few tumbledown homes in the vast landscape and little that is unkempt. Mercifully underdeveloped, but not impoverished, Ciociaria now enjoys the best of both worlds”.

We will based in Frosinone, the capital town of this province or Fiuggi, a beautiful little town, set in the mountains, with fine hotels, restaurants, shops; two perfect spots from which to tour this area outside of Rome.  We will visit both well-known sites and also those you may never have heard of but will never forget:  cities encircled by walls built centuries before the Roman Empire existed, the ruins of ancient Roman civilization, medieval hilltop towns and monasteries dating from the 12th Century. In less than an hour we can reach  the Eternal City and in a couple of hours we will be able to visit Pompeii and it takes even less to step into the multicultural City of Naples. I will guide you in the footsteps of famous Saints such as : St.Thomas of Aquinas, St. Francis, St. Benedict; one of the highlights is the visit to the enchanting village of Arpino, birthplace of Cicero, the most famous Roman Orator; of Caio Mario, the powerful Roman General, who reformed the Roman military system; of Vipsanio Agrippa the great architect who built the Pantheon in Rome. If you are interested in english literature, we could visit Picinisco, one of the many hilltop villages in the National Park of Abruzzi and Latium, where the great writer D. H Lawrence  took inspiration to write one of his lesser-known novel: “the Lost Girl". If you are interested in cinema then, I will  show you the enchanting little town of  Sora, hometown of Vittorio De Sica, one of the greatest film-makers of the italian neorealism and Fontana Liri, hometown of Marcello Mastroianni, unflagging partner of Sophia Loren; talking about Sophia, I must tell you that "La Ciociara" (Two Women), for which Loren won the 1962 Oscar, was shot here. Well, I could talk  for hours about art history, archaeology, traditions and culture of this wonderful land, so if you want to know more about Ciociaria and also about me, browse this site, if at the end of your virtual journey, you decide to come over, it will be my pleasure to show you the beauty of my native land.
